Spring BBQ to support community responders during toxic drug crisis

Williams Lake Tribune - 3/29/2024

A community organization is hosting an outdoor event this spring, and is inviting the public to gather and support one another during the toxic drug supply and overdose crisis.

The Williams Lake Community Action Team (WLCAT) will be hosting their Community Responders BBQ on Friday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Boitanio Park. The event will recognize members of the community who continue to put in time and effort in responding to the crisis.

They are also calling out to other organizations to show their support by hosting a booth at the event that provides resources to responders related to the crisis. Booths can also have interactive activities.

Free hot dogs and drinks will be available starting at 11:30 a.m.

The BBQ will recognize the eighth year since a public health emergency was declared across the province for the toxic drug and overdose crisis.

The WLCAT Harm Reduction team is a program of Housing and Harm Reduction at Canadian Mental Health Association Cariboo Chilcotin Branch, and is made up of members who have firsthand experiences with substance-use, local service agencies, volunteers and more.

In partnership with the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction and the Overdose Emergency Response Centre, the WLCAT is funded through the Community Action Initiative, which allows them to provide the communitywith action-oriented strategies to help reduce the affects of the toxic drug supply and overdose crisis.
