Where is Fresno’s most dangerous intersection? Nominate the spot in need of a safety fix

The Fresno Bee - 4/14/2024

Got an intersection in the Fresno area that seems like a nightmare?

The Fresno Bee is looking for suggestions of Fresno/Clovis intersections that are in need some type of a safety fix.

Maybe the intersection that comes to mind is where drivers run red lights?

Perhaps cars constantly travel faster than the posted speed limits?

Or portions of a street are dark or dimly lit at night and pedestrians tend to wander onto the road?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, road traffic crashes are a leading cause of death in the United States for people ages 1 to 54 years old.

Fresno rated fourth in the United States among cities with the highest speed-related fatal collisions (44.36%), based off 2017-2021 data by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Just last week in northeast Fresno, a man ran through a red light at the intersection of Friant and Audobon roads. Five vehicles ended up involved in the crash, and the man died.

Unfortunately for Fresno-area drivers, there have been collision-related deaths on practically all sides of the city.

Like in February 2023 when a driver died and injured another person during a street race on Blackstone near San Jose Avenue.

We know where traffic jams commonly occur.

The Shaw Avenue and Fresno Street intersection, for one, gets backed up at times with vehicles trying to make a right turn into nearby Fashion Fair Mall and cars continuing to exit Highway 41 and travel in an eastbound direction.

We know where new bike lanes have been installed and made those streets more challenging to travel along.

Last year, the City of Fresno created four miles of new dedicated lanes called Class IV bikeways to physically separate from automobile traffic near Palm and Belmont avenues in central Fresno.

What intersection in Fresno/Clovis do you find to be the most dangerous?

Nominations will end Friday, April 19, and we’ll let you know the results shortly after.
